Chairperson's Message & Education Principles

The Sendagaya Japanese School, Sendagaya Japanese Institute (S.J.I.) Group aims to:

  1. Provide a conducive environment for people of all nationalities to learn Japanese in a fun and effective manner using easy-to-understand Japanese.
  2. Develop capable talents for mutual understanding in a diversified international society.
  3. Promote international exchange and friendly relations through Japanese language education.

The S.J.I. Group was established in 1975 with the above aims as our education principles. Since then, many students from various countries around the world have graduated from the Japanese language courses offered by the various programs in our school.

In addition to being a means of communications, words express a person’s thoughts and a country’s culture and society. Learning a foreign language plays an important role in understanding a foreign culture. Therefore I think making learning easy is an important way of promoting international understanding. As a result, the Sendagaya Japanese School, S.J.I. Group have conducted researches and developed textbooks and teaching methods to help foreign students whose mother tongue is not Japanese to master a foreign language like Japanese effectively. This is because I firmly believe that Japanese language education will be useful in international exchanges.

Merits of SJI

S.J.I. is a Japanese language school established in 1975. Till date, more than 20,000 students from over 100 countries have studied Japanese at our school. Various people such as businessmen, students, housewives, researchers etc are studying here.

Merit 1: Various types of courses are available

There are various types of courses conducted at different time slots. You can choose one that suits you the most.

Merit 2: There are opportunities of interacting with local Japanese people

S.J.I. conducts training courses for Japanese language teachers. Therefore there will be ample opportunities to talk to Japanese students who are training to become Japanese language teachers and to listen to Japanese speaking to one another. Depending on the course, you may also get to attend some lessons together with other Japanese.

Merit 3: You will meet students from all over the world

Students from more than 100 countries have studied at S.J.I. up till now. The latest information is listed here.

Merit 4: All teachers are trained in using the same teaching method

Lessons are conducted by teachers who have completed the Japanese Teacher Training Course offered by S.J.I. The quality of the lessons is therefore constantly maintained by using the same teaching method.

Merit 5: Original textbooks developed by S.J.I. are used

For group lessons at the Elementary Level, an original textbook series called Communication Japanese that was developed by S.J.I. is used. This series has been written in an easy-to-understand manner even for students who are learning Japanese for the first time. Using the main textbooks, workbooks, exercise books and CDs, comprehensive Japanese language skills can be acquired.
